Looking after solid wood flooring
Everyday habits to preserve solid wood flooring in a rented home: cleaning, products to avoid, protecting furniture and stains.
BDW Invest ·
Well-maintained solid wood flooring lasts for decades. A few habits are enough to avoid scratches, stains and water damage, and to return it in good condition at the end of the lease.
Day to day
- Vacuum or sweep regularly: sand and dust scratch the wood.
- Clean with a well-wrung mop and a product suited to the finish, varnished or oiled.
- Wipe up any spilled water immediately.
To avoid
- Steam cleaners and buckets of water.
- Harsh household products, bleach and ammonia.
- Stiletto heels and unprotected chair castors.
Protecting the floor
Put felt pads under furniture legs, a protective mat under office chairs and a doormat at the entrance. Avoid plant pots placed directly on the floor.
Stains or scratches
For a light scratch on an oiled floor, a little maintenance oil is often enough. For a deep stain, a damaged board or a varnished floor, do not sand it yourself: tell your manager, who will call in a professional if needed.
